Adam’s Devotional – July 27- August 2, 2017

From Adam

Remember in the story of Jonah when the sailors throw Jonah into the sea to stop the storm?  Jonah is running from God, has disobeyed God, and it’s not hard to imagine that Jonah believes he’s going to pay for this disobedience with his life. But even though Jonah was running from God, God did not run from Jonah. God sends a huge fish to save him. God could have let Jonah die, but God doesn’t.  God saves this person who is resisting and running away from their calling.  God had already made God’s decision about Jonah long before Jonah ran.   Are you running from God?  What do you think about the fact that even though you run from God, God doesn’t run from you?  Do you believe that God has already made up God’s mind about you?  Like it or not, God has already decided to love you and to call you to love.  God’s up to something . . . be a part of it.

Adam’s Devotional- July 20-26, 2017

From Adam

So Jonah was sailing away from God on a boat, and God sends a storm to stop him.  The sailors find out that the storm is Jonah’s fault, and they ask him what to do.  Jonah tells them: You have to throw me overboard.  He realizes that it is his disobedience that has made this mess, and rather than take these sailors down with him, he takes responsibility.  At first, the sailors refuse, but after throwing everything except Jonah into the sea and straining at the oars to row back to land, they’re out of options.  It is with fear and trembling that they throw Jonah into the sea, and as if someone flipped a switch, the storm stops.  The sailors thought their way was the only way, their way was the right way and that they were the ones supposed to save Jonah and the ship.  But they were wrong.  How often do we all behave like the sailors?  How often do we allow legitimate fear to hold us back from faith? Where are the storms in your life that you have refused to allow God into?  God’s up to something . . . be a part of it.

Adam’s Devotional- July 13-19, 2017

From Adam…

When God sent Jonah to Nineveh, Jonah purposefully ran the other way.   When Jonah was on the boat heading to not-Nineveh, God brought a storm.  The sailors tried everything to keep the ship afloat, but it was not looking good.  The boat was going to sink and Jonah had no idea because he was sleeping.  That’s right, the sailors had to wake him up to help save the ship.  They asked him who he was and what God he worshiped. Even though Jonah was running from reality, the sailors remind him of his true identity and calling on that boat in the midst of the storm.  How often are we fast asleep in the storms of life? How have you allowed resisting or running from God’s call to put you in a state of denial about the truth? What sailors has God sent your way to wake you up and remind you who you are and what you’re called to do? God’s up to something . . . wake up and be a part of it.

Adam’s Devotional – July 6-12, 2017

From Adam…

Jonah is on the run.  He has heard very clearly God’s call to go to Nineveh (the city of Jonah’s enemies), and he has clearly made a decision to run the other way.  God’s up to something, and Jonah does not want to be a part of it.  He runs straight to the coast, finds a boat going to other side of the known world, buys a ticket, and hops aboard.  He’s running from God’s presence and God’s call.  What’s fascinating is that the story includes him purchasing a ticket.  Running away from God costs him something, literally. When you run away from God, where is the opposite side of the known world of your soul?  How has running from God cost you?  What currency have you paid to buy a one way ticket away from God?  God’s up to something . . . be a part of it.
